A group of residents and staff members from Linden Ponds recently had an opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the WCVB-TV Channel 5 studios. They met with on-air personalities, learned a bit about how the news is produced, and then got to watch a live newscast. The trip was planned after StormTeam 5 meteorologist Danielle Vollmar visited Linden Ponds last year.

“It was very interesting to go there and see how the whole thing works,” says Tom Bleakney, who lives at Linden Ponds.

The tour was particularly informative for Tom because he is one of several residents who volunteer in Linden Ponds’ on-site television studio, which boasts state-of-the-art equipment and an interesting lineup of daily programming on in-house station LP-TV.

Tom operates the camera, serves as the floor director, and also does a live sports talk show along with two fellow residents. He works the camera for an informational program featuring Linden Ponds’ Director of Sales Christine Hansen. Even though he’s behind the scenes for that show, Tom wears a microphone, and he and Hansen engage in humorous banter throughout each episode.

“We have fun fooling around with it,” Tom says. “It’s a good time.”

While touring the Channel 5 studio, Tom says he was surprised to discover that the meteorologists don’t use teleprompters and that most segments include a period when the newscasters are directed to “ad lib” about the news. He also noted that the cameras are controlled remotely in a location outside the studio.

And he even picked up a new trick to bring back to Linden Ponds’ in-house TV studio.

“Ten seconds before they are going on air, the floor director yells, ‘Stand by,’” Tom says. “So I’ve been doing that here for our shows, which is just kind of a fun thing to do.”
