Pat Knodel has been around the globe, including a trip to Antarctica 30 years ago. Daily, she delights in the tree-scape view from her balcony at Maris Grove.

Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Delaware County, Pa., opened in October 2006. Pat Knodel and her husband moved in a month later.

They weren’t really ready to move from their condo by Brandywine Creek, but they were ready to give up home maintenance.

When a friend announced that she planned to move to Maris Grove, they decided to check it out.

“The refundable entrance deposit sold us,” says Pat. Whether a resident leaves the community or lives out their life at Maris Grove, 90% of their entrance fee is returned to them or their estate (Maris Grove’s Residence and Care Agreement has all the details).

Comprehensive health services

Delaware had nothing like Maris Grove, Pat decided.

She likes that Maris Grove is a nonprofit continuing care retirement community and provides its health care services on a fee-for-service basis. People who don’t need extra care don’t pay for it.

But for those who do, that care is available at Maris Grove’s on-site rehabilitation and continuing care neighborhood.

Pat’s doctor practices in the campus medical center and sees only Maris Grove residents. And because her late husband retired from DuPont, she receives a stipend toward her Erickson Advantage health insurance. Erickson Advantage is a Medicare Advantage health insurance plan exclusive to Erickson Living residents.*

Doing what you love

The Knodels chose their apartment home during a winter sojourn in Florida. “We did everything via email,” says Pat. The two-bedroom residence is a short walk from the campus café. And after ten years’ growth, the leafy views from its windows suggest Pat lives in a tree house.

She applauds Erickson Living’s policy of building apartments instead of cottages. In Pat’s experience, people hibernate in their cottages.

Coming out of your apartment for meals, mail, and Maris Grove’s 100-plus clubs and activities means people socialize with one another, and socialization is critical for mental and physical health.

It also leads to strong friendship bonds. Maris Grove residents support one another through life’s difficult times. “I would have hated being in the condo after my husband died, but here I had all kinds of help,” Pat says referring to the campus social work team and medical team, as well as caring neighbors down every hallway.

Having written her memoirs, Pat now writes about some of her 1,400 neighbors and the goings-on at Maris Grove for NeighborNews, the monthly campus paper.

The community abounds in residents who’ve pursued interesting careers, who share their artistic talents, and who are living life to the fullest. Pat is one of them.

Her slide shows in Maris Grove’s Cardinal Theater of her globetrotting travels to 36 countries always attract a crowd. People constantly ask when she’ll give the next one.

The travelogues, which she’d presented for years in the University of Delaware’s lifelong learning program, feature Pat’s own photos, recorded commentary, and music. Staff from Maris Grove’s in-house TV station and community resource department handles the technical setup.

“I feel blessed,” Pat says. “The staff is wonderful. The amount of service from them and the lifestyle that’s here is better than anyplace else I can think of. [People should] come and see for themselves.”
