Devonshire member Barbara Quirk-Rizzo converted her second bedroom into a office furnished completely with built-in units.

Even before people move to Devonshire at PGA National, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Palm Beach Gardens, they experience its outstanding customer service.

For example, before they move in, they can customize their apartment home to suit their personal tastes. They can also delegate their downsizing and packing chores to a Devonshire-recommended senior move management company.

When Barbara Quirk-Rizzo moved this January, she took advantage of both of those fee-based services.

She downsized from a 2,300-square-foot home at Fairway Villas in PGA to a 1,500- square-foot Brittany floor plan, “and I have plenty of room here,” she says.

Working with Devonshire’s design coordinator, Gayle Hills, Barbara customized her apartment to create her ideal home. Light-filled and open, it’s an inviting place to return to at the end of the day.

In the master bathroom, Hills replaced Barbara’s tub with a spacious shower and built in a vanity and additional shelving. In the master bedroom closet, she installed a large shoe-shelving unit Barbara had designed.

She mounted a huge mirror to visually expand the dining room and laid bamboo flooring in the great room to complement Barbara’s late husband’s Asian art collection.

Significant changes took place at the second bedroom. Moving out a wall, enlarging a closet, and installing a door to the great room transformed the area into a private office suite.

The bedroom now features a wall-long built-in desk and a large built-in storage cabinet. Barbara’s chair and floor lamp are the only things not built in.

Moving without stress

The Brittany floor plan’s long walls provide abundant hanging space for the large paintings Barbara displays.

She worried about moving the paintings because her move to Florida from Kansas City, Mo., did not go well.

But this move went perfectly because Devonshire’s sales staff connected Barbara with senior move manager Senior Transitions. “They were absolutely wonderful,” Barbara says.

The manager came to Barbara’s house and helped her plan where everything would go in her new home.

“And everything fit,” Barbara says.

The Senior Transitions team also packed for Barbara and arranged for a moving company with extensive experience moving people to Devonshire. The team then unpacked and put Barbara’s belongings away after the move.

“Not a thing was broken,” she says. “It was such a good experience, and the move itself was very reasonably priced.”

For Barbara, moving on her own as a recent widow could have been fraught with stress, but Devonshire’s help minimized that.

And Hills’ assistance transformed the Brittany into Barbara’s vision of a comfortable home.

“I’ve not been here that long,” she says, “but I can tell I’m going to be very content.”

An easy, fun life

Although Barbara Quirk-Rizzo has friends who live at other area retirement communities, she chose Devonshire at PGA National because it provided amenities she values.

It offers five world-class clubhouse restaurants right on-site, and her apartment boasts views of gorgeous sunsets, a nature preserve, and one of Devonshire’s four lakes.

Barbara is also close to her volunteer efforts as a board member of Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and an usher at Palm Beach State College’s Eissey Theatre.

And she’s finding it easy to make new friends. Everyone Barbara has encountered at Devonshire has impressed her with their kindness. “It’s an easy life and a fun life,” she says.
