Sara Akers was no stranger to continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) when she moved last December to Oak Crest in Parkville, Md. In fact, she spent the better part of two years researching and visiting many CCRCs in the Baltimore-area before she made up her mind.

“There were a lot of nice communities,” says Sara. “I made a spreadsheet comparing all the pros and cons. Oak Crest met my needs the best and from a financial perspective seemed to be the most economical.”

At the top of Sara’s wish list was a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment where she could comfortably host family when they come to visit. She was prepared to wait 6 to 12 months to find the perfect match. To her surprise, it only took a few weeks.

“I looked at three different apartments,” says Sara. “I chose this one because it overlooks the courtyard. It was being completely renovated, so I was able to pick out everything, including the flooring, paint colors, cabinets, and hardware. It feels like a brand new home.”

Call in the expert

But downsizing from her three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath brick colonial wouldn’t be easy. To help her with her move, Sara turned to Oak Crest Personal Moving Consultant Ashley Ruth.

“Ashley is a gem!” says Sara. “She provided me with a binder full of resources and referrals of real estate agents and movers. Then she came to the house and we planned out the details of what furniture I wanted to bring and where it would go.

“The moving company they recommended was wonderful,” adds Sara. “They even took photos of how my bookcases and cabinets were arranged so that when they unpacked everything at the apartment it looked just like it did at the house. It felt like home my first night here.”

As she settles into her new home with the move now behind her, Sara’s confident she made the right choice.

“I was ready for this next chapter of my life,” says Sara. “The services that were available to me through Oak Crest helped make the move as easy as possible.”
