Moving and downsizing can be a time to not only simplify life but to discover what belongings truly matter—those that bring you joy.

Much like author Marie Kondo advises in her New York Times best-selling guide The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Loretta Mora was able to sort out pieces that bring her joy and shed belongings that don’t when she moved to Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, N.J.

When Loretta downsized from a two bedroom, two-bath house in a 55-plus community in May’s Landing to a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment home, she worked with Personal Moving Consultant Anne Connor to sort out what belongings she would take with her.

Magic in miniature

Connor meets with prospective residents in their home, armed with a magnetic floor plan of their new apartment. She tours the home and sees which existing furniture pieces they want to bring with them to their new home. Then she measures them out and places the to-scale pieces on the magnetic floor plan.

Thanks to Connor’s miniature floor plan, Loretta knew exactly where she would place her two favorite pieces—two end tables that had belonged to her mother-in-law and that her late husband had refinished. They fit perfectly in the living area on either side of her sofa.

“They were special to take with me,” Loretta says. “It was comforting to work with Anne before I moved to see where my furniture would go in my new apartment.”

Loretta also brought her husband’s dresser instead of her large, triple dresser “because I knew it would fit,” she says.

Moving made easier

Aside from assisting with furniture layout and downsizing, Connor also helped Loretta choose a real estate agent, Margaret Gallagher with Berkshire Hathaway.

Those are just a few of many services personal moving consultants provide priority list members. Each Erickson Living community has its own local personal moving consultant who provides complimentary coordination of all realty and moving needs, including downsizing, home staging, packing, and selection of a real estate professional.

“It would have been much, much, much harder without Anne’s help,” Loretta says. “She made moving easier.”
