Charlestown Sales Associate Jim Hawes (center) began working at the Erickson Living community just a few years before his parents Gwen and Jim Hawes, Sr. moved into the community.

Ellicott City, Md., native Jim Hawes grew up just down the street from Charlestown, an Erickson Living community in Catonsville. Now he is a sales associate at the community where he plays an integral part in helping people considering Charlestown as their next home.

“I’m part of a great team here at Charlestown,” says Hawes. “I meet with prospective residents every day and help them navigate the entire moving process from start to finish. For many people, this is their first time setting foot in the community. I listen to their needs, answer their questions, and provide them with all the information they need to make an informed decision.”

The area’s most sought-after continuing care retirement community for 33 years, Charlestown offers seniors a maintenance-free alternative to their oversized family homes. The amenity-rich continuing care retirement community features all-season access to shopping, dining, entertainment, education, fitness, and on-site medical care.

Along with the other members of the Charlestown sales team, Hawes assists retirees by helping them learn about the Charlestown lifestyle as well as with other aspects of the moving process—selecting an apartment, selling their house, downsizing, finding a real estate agent, and hiring a moving company.

“One of the great things about working at Charlestown is that, every day, I get to see all the benefits people experience living here and how it enriches their lives and makes them more independent,” says Hawes. “It is really rewarding to see someone satisfied with their new life. It’s what makes this job so special. Every day, I go home and feel like I’ve made a real difference in people’s lives.”

Building blocks

Before landing at Charlestown four years ago, Hawes enjoyed a successful career in sales and marketing at WMAR-TV (Channel 2), The Easton Club, and six years with the Baltimore Orioles.

“One thing I learned working in sales and marketing is the importance of building relationships,” says Hawes. “Here at Charlestown, the relationships we build are genuine. Each person who comes into our office has a unique story and background. Those relationships continue long after we hand them the keys to their new home.”

Hawes see one couple, in particular, on regular basis—his parents, Gwen and Jim Hawes, who moved to Charlestown in June.

“My parents were considering moving to Charlestown before I even started working here,” says Hawes. “Their apartment is not that far from my office, but believe it or not, I don’t run into them that often. They are active. My mother still plays tennis and golf, and she is out and about doing her thing. And my dad is involved at the fitness center.”

Perfect timing

It’s been four years since Hawes joined the Charlestown sales team. One thing he says he’s learned over the years is timing is everything.

“Whether you’re thinking about moving to Charlestown in the next two months or the next two years, I tell people the sooner we start communicating and laying out a timeline for you, the better off you will be,” he says. “Like any move, the more planning that goes into it, the smoother it is going to be.”

“If you are considering a move to Charlestown, the first step is to visit the community in person,” he adds. “I encourage people to attend a luncheon event at Charlestown and talk with others who have moved here. They have been through the whole process and are often the best source of advice. Then sit down, and let’s talk about your wants, needs, and interests. We will work with you so that you’re ready to move when an apartment home becomes available within your targeted timeframe.”
