Freezing temperatures; slick, dangerous roads; mounds of snow that need shoveling; and heating systems that give out on the day you need them most—there’s plenty to dread about mid-Atlantic winters.

But many Marylanders who have grown tired of dealing with the downsides of winter have found a warm and welcoming new home at Oak Crest, an Erickson Living community in Parkville, Md.

The community’s maintenance-free lifestyle enables people to enjoy the beauty of winter—like dining with friends in their choice of five on-site restaurants, working in the well-equipped woodshop, or relaxing with a good book in front of a roaring fireplace—all without any of the weather-related headaches you’ve come to expect living in your house.

The Tribune caught up with Personal Moving Consultant Ashley Ruth, who answered some frequently asked questions about the benefits of living at Oak Crest when the worst of winter arrives. Here’s what she has to say:

Q: What amenities does Oak Crest have to make life easier during the winter?

A: Having the ability to stay active and socially engaged regardless of the weather is a huge advantage to living at Oak Crest.

Every maintenance-free apartment is just a short indoor walk from our clubhouses, where you’ll find all of the conveniences of a small town. You can do your banking and shopping, get a haircut, take a college class, meet friends for a drink or a bite to eat, grab a book from the library—things you already do now but without hopping in and out of your car to do them.

You can even stick to your regular fitness routine, whether that’s walking indoors; exercising in the fitness center; or attending on-site aerobics, dance, or yoga classes. And if you ever feel under the weather, our medical center and pharmacy are just a few indoor steps away.

Q: How does living at Oak Crest keep community members safer during the winter?

A: The transportation service is a wonderful way to avoid driving in the snow. Oak Crest residents enjoy complimentary transportation anywhere on the 87-acre campus, as well as within a designated distance. For a nominal fee, residents can ride in comfort to local places like White Marsh Mall, nearby restaurants, and downtown Baltimore destinations like the Meyerhoff.

You also never have to worry about shoveling heavy snow or risk slipping on an icy sidewalk to go get your mail. From snow removal to appliance repair or replacement, the highly skilled maintenance staff at Oak Crest responds quickly seven days a week.

Although rare, the community is also equipped to handle a power outage. We have emergency generators that keep the electricity on in all of our public areas and hallways. Emergency medical staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And our markets and restaurants are open and well stocked.

Q: What kind of feedback do you receive from residents about how living at Oak Crest has made their winters more enjoyable?

A: Many of our community members have stopped going to Florida as an escape from the winter months. Instead, they have decided to make Oak Crest their year-round home.

The wide variety of activities and conveniences offered at Oak Crest make it an attractive place to live in any season. We have nearly 200 resident-led clubs and activities, including dance classes, bridge groups, art classes, theater and choir groups, a woodshop, and dozens of volunteer opportunities. And the weather never affects your ability to socialize, dine out, or even cheer on the Ravens in our Acorn Pub.

Q: Is there still time for me to move to Oak Crest before winter sets in?

A: Depending upon which apartment style you choose, we have helped folks move within just a month if need be. However, our one-bedroom floor plans are tougher to come by, so I encourage you to call today to discuss your timeline and wish list.

I also urge you to join our priority list, which will increase your odds of getting the apartment you want, when you want it. As a priority list member, you will have access to a list of trusted, proven professionals who will help you downsize, sell your home, and manage a stress-free move.
