Enjoying the latest edition of the Tribune in their temporary residence at Tallgrass Creek are Janet and Bob Butterworth, who will move to their new home in Hummingbird Square when it’s completed next summer.

When Janet and Bob Butterworth decided to move to a retirement community, Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Living community in Overland Park, Kans., was the obvious choice.

“We know so many people here,” says Bob, who retired as senior vice president for an insurance company. “Surprisingly, when we moved we found we knew even more.”

The couple was specific about the apartment home they wanted, so when plans for Hummingbird Square, Tallgrass Creek’s new residence building, were announced, they quickly reserved one of the spacious Oxford floor plans. Though Hummingbird Square is scheduled for completion in summer 2017, the Butterworths chose to move temporarily into another residence at Tallgrass Creek.

“We decided to sell the home we’d lived in for 40 years and get rid of things we knew we wouldn’t need,” says Janet. “With that behind us, we are ready to move right into Hummingbird Square when it’s completed.”

First day offers

The couple worked with Erickson Living-recommended real estate agents Ron and Joan Yaffe and received three offers before their home, also in Overland Park, was even officially listed.

“[The real estate agent] put the ‘for sale’ sign in the yard and nine people came that first day,” says Janet. “Three made offers.”

Though two of the offers didn’t work out, the final one did.

The Butterworths also worked with recommended senior moving professionals who helped the couple pare down what would work best in their new home.

“They knew what they were doing and helped us make some tough decisions about what to take and not take,” says Bob.

Great partnership

The couple used an Erickson Living-preferred moving company that worked with the senior moving professionals to carefully place furniture in their new Tallgrass Creek home.

“I did nothing,” says Bob. “The entire process took two hours—we walked in, and it was all together.”

A self-proclaimed volunteer, Bob has joined Tallgrass Creek’s men’s golf group, ukulele club, and men-only strength training class. Janet is also enjoying exercise classes.

“We’re planning to try everything,” says Bob. “So far, it’s been great.”
