Sales Counselor Jane Kiegel can help you take the next step toward your new life at Brooksby, the Erickson Living community in Peabody, Mass.

Bill and Joan Phelan describe themselves as planners.

“We look toward the future and anticipate what we might need,” says Bill, a retired manager for the U.S. Department of the Navy.

So when Bill accompanied his sister to tour Brooksby Village as a possibility for their parents, he could see the potential for his own future.

“I was only in my mid-50s at the time, but I could see my wife and me enjoying life at Brooksby down the road,” says Bill.

He mentioned the thought to his wife Joan, who toured the Peabody, Mass., community later on.

“We both liked what we saw, so we joined the priority list,” says Bill.

Priority list members, prospective residents with an interest in moving to Brooksby at some point in the future, put down a fully refundable $1,000 deposit and a $150-per-person nonrefundable application fee to reserve their place in line for the apartment home of their choice.

The day they make their deposit becomes their priority list date. Priority list members identify their preferred floor plan and location within the community. When an apartment that meets that criteria becomes available, the sales team offers priority list members the first right of refusal based on their priority list dates.

“If you have any inkling of moving to Brooksby, sign up for the priority list,” says Bill. “It’s refundable, so there’s nothing to lose if you change your mind.”

Move when you’re ready

Meanwhile, Bill and Joan were enjoying retired life at their home on Cape Cod.

“We built the house on the Cape to entertain family and friends,” says Bill. “It was 2,500 square feet and could sleep 18 people.”

Once the couple hit their mid-60s, however, they began to picture themselves enjoying the maintenance-free lifestyle at Brooksby.

“Any worries [about home maintenance] that keep you up at night, I’ve had them,” says Bill. “Now that we live at Brooksby, I don’t have to think about those chores anymore. They even clean the windows for us twice a year.”

Bill and Joan moved to their two-bedroom, one-bath, Fairmont-style apartment home four years ago. Now they’re enjoying the lifestyle they first envisioned a decade ago.

“I work in the woodshop, and Joan uses the fitness center,” says Bill. “We don’t currently need any of the extended care options like assisted living or home health, but it gives me peace of mind to know they’re available on campus should we need them in the future.”

Now that they’ve made their move, Bill and Joan serve as resident ambassadors, assisting the sales team at marketing events. When Bill talks with prospective residents, he shares his story and encourages them to take the next step.

“Some people are visiting the community for the first time, and they need to schedule a visit with Jane [Kiegel, sales counselor] to learn more about Brooksby,” says Bill. “Others may be ready to join the priority list. Whatever the next step, I encourage them to take it.”
