Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet?

If you’re like many Americans, losing weight and getting in shape will be high on your list.

At Brooksby Village, the Erickson Living community in Peabody, Mass., year-round fitness offerings ensure residents have all the tools they need to achieve their wellness goals.

For Nancy Baker, that means hitting the pool three times a week.

“I’ve always been a swimmer,” says Nancy, a radiologist who retired in 2015. “When I was a resident at New York Medical College, I’d get up early to swim. I knew all the pools in the city.”

Nancy touts swimming’s beneficial properties and says they still help her today.

“Swimming is a great stress relief for me,” she says. “I’ve always been able to attack my problems in the pool.”

Continuous improvement

Since retiring, Nancy has revved up her weekly fitness routine. She’s added two water fitness classes taught by Fitness Specialist Sharon Graves.

“I moved to Brooksby in 2002, and I’ve been swimming laps in the pool since then,” says Nancy. “Now that I’m retired, I have more time so I’ve been able to add classes to my workout routine. I take the Aqua Cardio Core class on Mondays. It helps strengthen my core and improves my posture.”

Nancy also takes Aqua-Chi on Fridays, a class that resembles water ballet and promotes balance.

“It’s so easy to work out [at Brooksby],” says Nancy. “The pool and fitness center are just a short walk from my apartment. I don’t have to worry about driving to a fitness center and finding a parking space. It’s all right here.”

Nancy credits Brooksby’s team of fitness specialists with giving her fresh motivation to work out. The fitness staff, three full-time specialists and one part-time, collectively teach around 30 exercise classes each week and offer personal training sessions.

“The staff is a great resource,” says Nancy. “I learn a lot just by watching them work with other residents in the fitness center.”

In late 2016, Nancy was recognized as the fitness center’s Member of the Month for her commitment to wellness.

“Each month, the fitness team chooses a resident who does more than just show up,” says Wellness Manager Rokia Paone. “Nancy is a great example of someone who goes above and beyond in the fitness center and in the swimming pool.”

Maintenance-free workout

Brooksby’s fitness center is also a frequent destination for Roger and Beth Lessard, who moved to the Peabody community in August 2014 from Wilmington.

“I was tired of keeping up our yard and swimming pool,” says Roger. “We also had two rooms in our house with fitness equipment—free weights, a treadmill, and a stationary bike. The best part about the fitness center at Brooksby is that I don’t have to worry about maintaining it.”

The couple are part of the early bird crowd, hitting the gym at 6 a.m., five days a week.

“We lift weights, use the machines, and ride the recumbent bike before we swim laps in the pool,” says Beth. “Then we get on with our day.”
