While many are just getting up in the morning, Culver Hayes can be found working out in Seabrook’s fitness center six days a week. Since moving to the Tinton Falls, N.J., Erickson Living community in November 2001, he has completed 4,000 workouts.

“Working out makes me feel good,” Culver says.  “Without it, I feel sluggish.”

Hayes has been active his whole life. When he resided in Berkeley Heights, he used to run in the morning before going to work. At Seabrook, he uses the aerobic machines and free weights in the on-site fitness center.

“It can be difficult some days to stay motivated, but sticking to a routine helps,” Culver says.

Seabrook recognizes residents for 100, 500, and 1,000 workouts in the fitness center. When residents achieve 100 workouts, their photo is posted on the wall, and fellow residents in the fitness center take a moment to applaud them for their outstanding achievement.

Culver is one of a handful of residents who have completed more than 3,000 workouts.

The Seabrook fitness center has equipment specifically designed for older adults and offers group fitness classes like yoga, tai chi, and water aerobics in the heated, indoor swimming pool.
