When Marie Dmoch retires from her sales counselor position at Ann’s Choice on June 30, Ryan Doherty, promoted to sales counselor several months ago, will succeed her in the role.

On June 30, Marie Dmoch will retire from her 16-year position as Ann’s Choice’s sales counselor. Then Ryan Doherty, who was promoted to sales counselor last September, will handle the reins on his own.

Dmoch started at Ann’s Choice, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Bucks County, Pa., in 2001. The welcome center was a temporary building made from seven trailers on Street Rd., and construction on the 103-acre campus in the back of the community was barely under way.

“We called those early residents our pioneers,” Dmoch says. “They didn’t have the luxury of walking through buildings to see what Ann’s Choice was like. They had to take our word about this wonderful new community.”

In no time, however, even before the community officially opened Aug. 1, 2003, residents and staff resembled a close extended family, an attitude that continues now throughout Ann’s Choice’s three neighborhoods and among its 2,100 community members.

Sweet sentiments

When Dmoch meets with prospective community members, she also comes to know their families. She hears their life stories, learns their likes and dislikes, and truly listens to what they say. As a result, she readily bonds with them and they with her.

As Dmoch leads campus tours now, new and long-time residents alike come up and thank her for helping them select their home. “I think of you every day because I so love my apartment,” someone recently told her.

Such sentiments tug at her heart.

“Leaving Ann’s Choice has been a difficult decision,” says Dmoch. “But it’s time for me to spend more time with my family, to travel, volunteer, and take the watercolor class I’ve long wanted to enjoy.

“I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life,” she adds. “It will be a whole new adventure. Then at some point, I’ll be back at Ann’s Choice, not as staff but as a resident.”

Passing the baton

Dmoch is confident she’s leaving the sales counselor position in good hands. Her successor, Ryan Doherty, has worked in the sales office for more than two years and at Ann’s Choice for ten.

“He has a true understanding of the community and a wonderful rapport with the people who live here,” says Dmoch. “I know he will have future residents’ interests at heart.”

The sales counselor position isn’t a 9-to-5 job. That’s fine with Doherty because he believes so strongly in how Ann’s Choice can enrich people’s lives.

“The challenge is to go the extra mile to let people see for themselves the difference that living here can make,” he says. “Letting them know what it’s like to be an Ann’s Choice resident is exactly why we’re here.”

Doherty had always hoped to join the community’s sales team. “I aimed to help with sales any way I could,” he says, “so I’m excited about this new opportunity.”
