A visit two years ago to Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Delaware County, Pa., was all it took for Barbara Winfree to know she wanted to live there.

“My neighbor’s aunt lived at Maris Grove, and they invited me to lunch with them at a campus restaurant,” she says. A member of the sales staff happened to be giving a tour that day, so Barbara traipsed along.

“I was impressed,” she says. “Everybody said hello and seemed very friendly. I thought, ‘I like this!’”

Until that luncheon, Barbara hadn’t considered moving. But afterward, she started downsizing from her ranch-style house and its one-acre lot in Glen Mills. It didn’t seem too early to prepare for life at Maris Grove.

Barbara joined the community’s priority list in 2015. When the new apartment homes were offered at the beginning of construction, she reserved an apartment home, one with a patio because she has a dog. This month, she moves into her new home.

Her perfect place

Barbara found her ideal home when Sales Counselor Kimberly Janson showed her a floor plan for a one-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath apartment in Maple Crossing, one of two new residence buildings in Redwood Commons, Maris Grove’s third and newest neighborhood opening this June.

Barbara has never owned a new home before. “But here I could choose my cabinets, flooring, finishes, paint colors, all of that,” she says. She’ll see what her choices look like when she takes her keys this month.

The Holden model she chose features an open floor plan. Its great room includes an expansive dining alcove that will become Barbara’s computer room, and its ultra-spacious living room provides flexible furniture placement.

Barbara delights in the eat-in kitchen with its generously sized pantry and triple window. She’ll invite friends from Glen Mills in for card games around her kitchen table.

And she’ll bake, but she doesn’t intend to cook. Barbara anticipates being waited on and letting Maris Grove’s chefs prepare the cooked-to-order meals she’ll enjoy with her neighbors in the on-site restaurants.

Instead of trudging to the basement to do laundry, she’ll have a full-size washer and dryer across from the walk-in closet in her master suite.

And she’ll never have to climb in and out of a tub because her en-suite bathroom features a large walk-in shower.

Vibrant living

While she’s happy to leave house and yard chores behind, Barbara’s main reason for moving to Maris Grove was socialization because her pre-Maris Grove lifestyle hasn’t been very active.

At Maris Grove she’ll get to know people from different backgrounds, different cultures, and eclectic interests.

An avid gardener, she’ll plant flowers and vegetables in her community garden space. She’ll do water exercises in the on-site swimming pool. And she’ll play cards, of course.

But also, “I’m looking forward to doing something different, taking up new activities,” Barbara says. “I’d like to try my hand at a painting class. I want to take advantage of Maris Grove’s day trips and cruises. And I want to try all the restaurants.

“I didn’t look at any other retirement communities because I liked it here,” she adds. “Maris Grove is for me.”
