With this year’s active hurricane season behind us, it’s now time to prepare for freezing temperatures, icy roads, and snow. But before winter arrives, Maryland retirees who have grown tired of dealing with the downsides of the cold season have found a warm and welcoming respite at Oak Crest, an Erickson Living community in Parkville, Md.

The community’s maintenance-free lifestyle enables residents to enjoy the beauty of winter without skipping a beat. In fact, thanks to Oak Crest’s under-one-roof concept, more than 200 clubs, activities, and numerous social events continue seamlessly regardless of the weather outdoors.

The Tribune recently caught up with Sales Counselor Melisa Batac who answered some frequently asked questions about the benefits of living at Oak Crest during the winter. Here’s what she had to say.

Q: What amenities does Oak Crest have so I can stay active and engaged during the winter?

A: Having the ability to stay active and socially engaged regardless of the weather is a huge advantage to living at Oak Crest.

We have a full schedule of fun activities, including concerts, lectures, movies, and social gatherings. You can exercise at the fitness center, swim in the heated indoor pool, join friends for dinner at one of the community’s five on-site restaurants, spend the day at the salon and spa, and even pick up a variety of sundries at the convenience store.

The clubhouses at Oak Crest are linked to residence buildings via indoor, climate-controlled walkways giving you year-round access to every amenity on campus.

Q: How does living at Oak Crest keep me safer during the winter?

A: We strive to reduce and minimize winter dangers and make the season enjoyable for our community members. So rest assured, no matter what Mother Nature throws our way, all of the Erickson Living services you enjoy continue unaffected.

Our on-site medical center makes it more convenient than ever to see your doctor, whose office is located just a short indoor walk from your apartment home, or you can hop on the shuttle for door-to-door service.

Oak Crest community members enjoy complimentary transportation anywhere on the 87-acre campus, as well as within a designated distance off campus. For a nominal fee, residents can ride in comfort to local places like White Marsh Mall, nearby restaurants, and downtown Baltimore destinations like the Meyerhoff.

It’s also worth noting, we have never once closed an Erickson Living campus because of the weather. We have snow equipment and a committed, hard-working team that keeps our campus open 24 hours a day. In fact in 2016, when more than 30 inches of snow fell on the community, staff members rallied together to ensure that life went on as normal for everyone who lives at Oak Crest.

Q: What feedback do you receive from residents about how living at Oak Crest has made their winters more enjoyable?

A: Many of our community members have stopped going to Florida as an escape from the winter months. Instead, they have decided to make Oak Crest their home year-round. The variety of activities and conveniences offered at Oak Crest make it an attractive place to live in any season.

We have nearly 200 resident-led clubs and activities, including dance classes, bridge groups, art classes, theater and choir groups, a wood shop, and dozens of volunteer opportunities. And the weather never affects your ability to socialize, dine out, or even cheer on the Ravens in our Acorn Pub.

Q: Is there still time for me to move to Oak Crest before winter sets in?

A: Depending upon which apartment style you choose, you could possibly move within just a month if need be. However, our one-bedroom floor plans are tougher to come by, so I encourage you to call today to discuss your time line and wish list.

I also urge you to join our priority list, which will increase your odds of getting the apartment you want, when you want it. As a priority list member, you will also receive a list of trusted, proven professionals who will help you downsize, sell your home and enjoy a stress-free move.
