Eli and Carol Bortman, pictured with their dog Clyde, used resources available through the Erickson Realty and Moving Services to coordinate their move to Brooksby, an Erickson Living community in Peabody, Mass.

After a luncheon at Brooksby Village in May 2017, Carol Bortman came away with the impression that the Peabody, Mass., community was a place she could call home.

“Brooskby met the top three criteria I was looking for in a retirement community,” says Carol, the former dean of nursing at Brockton Hospital School of Nursing at Fisher College. “It offers security, social interaction, and convenience. Brooksby reminds me of a college campus with all the amenities and resources right on site.”

Carol returned to Brooksby with her husband Eli, a retired tax lawyer and professor at Babson College, and the couple joined the priority list, putting down a $1,000 fully refundable deposit to reserve their place in line for their preferred floor plan.

“We wanted a Lancaster-style apartment because the windows on two sides bring in so much natural light,” says Carol.

As it turned out, a Lancaster became available in early summer.

“We thought we’d move in a few years,” says Eli. “Then the right apartment came along and we decided to go for it.”

Customized moving plan

As they met with Brooksby’s sales team, Eli and Carol learned about the resources available through Erickson Moving and Realty Services, which assists prospective residents with every aspect of the moving process.

Personal Moving Consultant Laurie Phillips offers complimentary coordination of moving resources. She visited Eli and Carol in their Winchester home to tailor a moving plan to suit their needs.

“Laurie brought a copy of the Lancaster floor plan on a magnetic board with moveable furniture pieces to scale,” says Carol. “She measured our furniture and helped us determine which pieces we could bring with us to Brooksby and how to best position them in our new apartment.”

Phillips also provided referrals to trusted real estate agents, senior move managers, and moving companies.

“The communication and planning between all the people involved in our move was seamless,” says Carol. “It was orchestrated like a symphony.”

Eli and Carol’s home of 45 years in Winchester was under contract within two months. The couple moved into their Brooksby apartment in August 2017.

“Everything was done by the end of our move-in day and we weren’t tired,” says Carol. “The moving resources offered through Brooksby were fabulous.”
