January is one of the busiest times of the year for Greenspring Sales Counselor Sheila Willing.

“Many people look at the start of the New Year as a time to make important resolutions,” she says. “For the many people we meet, moving to Greenspring in 2018 tops the resolution list.”

With an occupancy rate of over 98%, higher than any other continuing care community in the country, there are currently only a handful of apartment homes available. Fortunately, the highly sought-after large, two-bedroom, one-bath Flagstaff, is among the available options.

Love at first sight

Community member Virginia Fernbach knew immediately that the Flagstaff was the perfect home from the moment she stepped inside.

“I had been on the priority list for a long time,” she says. “In 2015 I was ready to move and looked at a variety of floorplans. When I stepped inside the Flagstaff, the large bay window struck me immediately. I could see the trees, and that is very important to me. The window also provides my dog Cosette the ability to look out and people-watch.”

And while the bay window captured Virginia’s attention, the open, airy layout and large bedrooms sealed the deal.

“The Flagstaff is really well designed,” she says. “Entering the apartment, the kitchen is immediately to my right and my master bedroom is to the left.”

An accomplished artist who enjoys working with watercolor, acrylics, and ink, Virginia has plenty of wall space in the Flagstaff to showcase her artwork. She placed two large, framed canvases over the couch in her living room.

“I also turned my entryway into a gallery with some of my favorite paintings,” she says. “I love that as I enter my home I am welcomed by art.”

Room to live

Located just off the living room, Virginia’s spacious master bedroom comfortably provides plenty of room for her queen-size bed, an armoire, a reading chair, a large trunk, and a triple dresser.

In addition to the enviable master bedroom, the Flagstaff boasts a large second bedroom, ideal for a home office, guest bedroom, or, in Virginia’s case, an art studio/music room.

“When I first began looking at Greenspring’s apartment homes, I wasn’t sure I needed a full second bedroom,” she says. “But it was extremely important to me to have dedicated space for both an art studio and my piano. The Flagstaff’s second bedroom is perfect for both.”

Virginia’s second bedroom provides more than enough space for a large art desk, art easels, a piano, a computer desk, and a large bookcase.

“This room is essential to my life at Greenspring,” she says. “It holds everything I love to do. It’s wonderful how it all fits so nicely.”

Truly unique

Prior to her move, Virginia worked with Greenspring’s Custom Interiors to make her new home truly her own.

“I wanted to open up the wall between the kitchen and the living room, replacing the full wall with a half wall,” she says. “I was surprised to learn that it was no problem to do so.”

“Like Virginia, many people I meet with are surprised to learn that they are able to make customizations to their homes to meet their unique needs,” says Willing. “Our residents opt for customizations prior to moving in or even years after living in their home.”

Popular customizations include adding crown molding, built-in bookshelves, or custom window treatments.

Under the guidance of Greenspring Personal Moving Consultant Anna Greves, Virginia also received help from a recommended senior move company to prepare her new home prior to her arrival.

“They took measurements of all the furniture I wanted to take with me and marked it up on the Flagstaff floorplan,” she says. “As a result, I was able to ensure that everything would fit properly. And once I arrived at Greenspring, I knew exactly where everything would go.”

Living large

Outside her beautiful apartment home, Virginia enjoys access to a wide range of unbeatable amenities and services, including a state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics center with indoor pool, a medical center, four restaurants, a professional theater, classrooms, a hair salon, and a bank. And more than 200 resident-run clubs and activities provide a wealth of opportunities to meet like-minded friends.

Shortly after moving to Greenspring in September 2015, Virginia, impressed with the number of artists and artistic groups on campus, created a visual arts group. Under her leadership, the group develops activities and resources for community members who are artists or who have an interest in the visual arts.

“I am very pleased with both my apartment home and life at Greenspring,” she says. “I’m having a wonderful time.”
