Jan Schechter, Maris Grove Personal Moving Consultant

Jan Schechter, recently named Maris Grove’s new personal moving consultant, brings excellent credentials to her position.

As an executive sales trainer for Elizabeth Arden, she covered an 11-state territory on the West Coast. To pursue her passion for making home a special place, she enrolled in Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art & Design and then launched her own design firm.

Most recently, Schechter worked in real estate helping seniors to downsize and sell their homes. She also helped her mother downsize from a large house and property.

“When I interviewed for the position at Maris Grove,” Schechter says, “I told them I thought I was meant to be in the position. It’s such a fit with my background.”

From interview to in person

When she researched Erickson Living, Schechter came away impressed with its fee-for-service, continuing care model.

Maris Grove’s amenities, quality construction, and the way it simplifies people’s lives by taking away the stresses of home ownership impressed
her too.

Now, “It’s such a pleasure to see the culture up close and personal in terms of how happy the residents are,” she says. “They love living at Maris Grove.”

In good hands

In her new position, Schechter removes the stress from prospective community members’ moves. She makes complimentary home visits to measure the furniture they hope to bring to Maris Grove and develops a floor plan that accommodates those pieces.

Through Erickson Realty and Moving Services, she also provides referrals to trusted and approved moving-related professionals, including real estate agents with proven track records in the local housing market.

Schechter spent her first months at Maris Grove shadowing her predecessor Suzanne McAllister. McAllister launched the Erickson Realty and Moving Services program at Maris Grove in 2008. It’s been extremely successful ever since.

McAllister has now taken on new responsibilities with Erickson Living. “Having worked closely with Jan [Schechter] after she joined the sales team last September, I feel very good leaving the position in her hands,” McAllister says.

Schechter connects with community members as a result of her own downsizing experience. She moved from a 6,000-square-foot home to a smaller three-bedroom house.

“It was challenging and stressful,” Schechter says, “but it was also cathartic to realize that I didn’t really need so many of my things. And in the end, I didn’t want them. It feels liberating to be unburdened by belongings.”

In her spare time, Schechter enjoys challenging herself to learn new recipes and master different cuisines. She also hikes, plays tennis, and spends time with her Tibetan terrier.
