A little over a year ago, Herman and Winifred Messmer decided to sell their house in Hingham, Mass. They knew they were ready for maintenance-free retirement living and wanted to live at Linden Ponds, an Erickson Living community in Hingham, Mass.

“We were in a two-story colonial, and we had to make a move,” Herman says. “It was a lot of work and somewhat dangerous [to do repairs], so it was time to go.”

While moving can be stressful, the tasks of downsizing and selling their property were comfortably manageable for the Messmers. As prospective Linden Ponds residents, they had access to Erickson Realty and Moving Services, a special program that offers complimentary coordination of all realty and moving needs, including downsizing, home staging, packing, and selection of a real estate professional. They worked directly with Linden Ponds Personal Moving Consultant Lynne Ford, who connected them with an experienced real estate agent and moving company.

Trusted, reliable partners

The Messmers chose a Coldwell Banker real estate agent who had helped other Linden Ponds residents sell their homes. Herman says she was a savvy negotiator and was able to sell the house for just $1,000 below asking price.

“She was very good and very professional,” he says.

Herman and Winifred had lived in their house for 40 years, so they had accumulated a good deal of stuff. Herman sold some items on Facebook and at a local consignment shop, and he gave other things, like tools, to friends who could use them. For all the furniture and household items they decided to keep, the Messmers hired a trusted moving company that Ford recommended.

“I picked Burkhardt [Brothers Moving & Storage] because they advertised that they did a lot of work at Linden Ponds, so I knew they would know their way around here,” Herman says.

Herman and Winifred selected a Jackson-style apartment home at Linden Ponds. The spacious corner unit has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Now that they don’t have to worry about taking care of a house, they have even more time for the things they enjoy.

Herman, who has completed the Boston Marathon three times, makes good use of Linden Ponds’ on-site fitness center. Every summer, he competes in the Hingham Fourth of July Road Race.

“This is the eighth year I’ve come in first in my age group,” he says. “I’ve been doing it for 37 years.”
