Eileen and Buck Gatewood stop by Windsor Run during the holidays. They are two of the pioneer residents moivng to the new Erickson Living community this spring.

This spring Windsor Run will welcome its first community members to the Erickson Living community in Matthews, N.C. Eagerly anticipating their move from the nearby Mayfair community in south Charlotte, Buck and Eileen Gatewood are excited to be counted among the community’s first residents.

With only a few weeks remaining until their move, the couple is busy meeting their future neighbors, packing their treasured belongings, and planning for an eagerly anticipated new beginning.

“We seriously examined the type of lifestyle we wanted for the next decades of our lives,” says Buck. “While currently in good health, we worried about what we would do if one of us suffered from an illness or accident. We also love to travel, which in our current home necessitates having someone watch for packages, get the mail, and periodically check the townhome.”

Evaluating options

The Gatewoods explored several communities in the Charlotte area, taking their time to talk with staff and analyze the costs and benefits of each.

“We came very close to signing up for the waiting list at two well-known communities in the area,” says Buck. “However, most of them were older and needed upgrading. We could only imagine what those communities would be like in 10 to 15 years. Then a postcard came in the mail inviting us to attend a luncheon for a new continuing care retirement community under construction—Windsor Run.”

It was a delivery that would change the Gatewoods’ lives.

“We decided to attend the introductory session, and boy, are we glad we did,” says Eileen. “We learned a lot about the plans for Windsor Run, discovering that Erickson Living communities strive for wellness and healthy independent living while providing top-quality assisted living, skilled nursing care, and memory care.”

In addition, the couple studied the printed Windsor Run materials, read through the corporate philosophy on the Erickson Living website, and researched all the public information on Windsor Run and Erickson Living.

Liking what they saw, the Gatewoods joined the Windsor Run priority list, ensuring themselves a future home at the community. After carefully reviewing the various floor plans, they selected the deluxe two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath with den Weston.

“We felt that the Weston layout and size would work very well for our space needs and desire to continue independent living in a spacious and luxurious apartment,” says Eileen.

Wheels in motion

At the end of August 2017, the couple took the next step, putting down a deposit and becoming reservists. Since that time, they have taken full advantage of the seminars and informational sessions offered at Windsor Run.

“We’ve met with residents from Ashby Ponds [an Erickson Living community in Ashburn, Va.]; learned a lot more about the continuing care benefits and facilities that will be available at Windsor Run; met with George Comfort, the new executive director for Windsor Run; attended a seminar on Windsor Run’s Signature Dining; and even had the opportunity to drive through Riderwood, an Erickson Living community in Silver Spring, Md.,” says Buck.

With an anticipated move date on the calendar, the couple went right to work planning for the sale of their townhouse and the logistics of moving. Personal Moving Consultant Rachel Gilbert visited the couple in their home with a list of preferred real estate agents and moving professionals, each carefully screened for the top-notch services they offer. She also provided the couple with a floor plan of their new Weston apartment home, so together they could determine what furniture pieces would best fit in their new space.

Looking forward

With mere weeks until their move, the Gatewoods are excited about the many opportunities the future holds.

“One piece of advice that we heard from many of the Erickson Living residents we’ve met really struck a chord,” says Buck. “And it was this—you should make the move sooner rather than later so that you can really take advantage of all the good things that an Erickson Living community has to offer. In addition to providing us savings on our monthly expenses, I strongly believe that our move to Windsor Run will truly free up time in our lives to do more of the things we want to do.”

“One of our favorite sayings is ‘Happiness is not a destination; it is a journey,’” says Eileen. “We are very happy about our journey to Windsor Run and look forward to an exciting, activity-filled life for many years to come.”
