In his 1962 State of the Union address, President John F. Kennedy said, “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” It was a simple yet profound statement about the value of preparing ahead.

Planning for the future is a concept that follows us throughout our lives. As children, we strive for good grades in order to gain acceptance to college. In young adulthood, we save money in preparation for an eventual marriage and family. And as we age, we save money and plan ahead for retirement.

In every phase of our life, the more options we allow ourselves, the more freedom we have to make the choices that best suit our needs.

The same can be said when considering to downsize from an oversized house where you once raised your family, to a sensible, worry-free option like the apartment homes at Charlestown, an Erickson Living community located in the heart of Catonsville, Md.

Charlestown offers spacious, maintenance-free apartment homes, all with indoor access to a variety of amenities, including six restaurants, a fitness center, aquatics center, medical center, pharmacy, bank, hair salon, woodshop, and convenience store.

The community’s on-site continuing care neighborhood also offers peace of mind should you ever need assisted care, memory care, post-acute rehabilitation, or nursing care services in the future.

How to keep your options open

If you’ve ever considered moving to a continuing care retirement community like Charlestown, Sales Counselor Jim Hawes says joining the community’s priority list is a no-risk way to keep your options open.

“I have seen firsthand the great benefits that come with being a member of the priority list because my parents became Charlestown residents before I ever started working here,” says Hawes.

“Joining the priority list secures your position for your preferred apartment home model,” Hawes says. “The day you join the priority list becomes your priority date, giving you preference over everyone else who joins the list after you. We’ll notify you when your desired apartment styles become available. If you’re not ready to move at that time, it is simply offered to the next member on the list, and your priority list status remains the same. It’s that simple.”

Hawes encourages prospective residents to join the priority list, which requires an application; a refundable deposit of $1,000; and a one-time, nonrefundable processing fee of $150 per person.

Priority list perks

There are many benefits to joining the priority list at Charlestown. They include advance notice of important community news and special savings; transfer of membership to any Erickson Living community across the country; and invitations to members-only events, including workshops, seminars, parties, and luncheons. These members-only events are a great way to get to know your future neighbors and the friendly staff.

“Our events vary from financial roundtable discussions to health care offerings through our medical center, and presentations from our Erickson Realty and Moving Services team, who share best practices from real estate professionals, relocation experts, and moving companies,” Hawes says.

“In fact, one of the biggest advantages comes at moving time when priority list members have access to Erickson Realty and Moving Services to help them downsize, choose a real estate agent, and plan their furniture arrangement in their new home, among other helpful services,” says Hawes.

Priority list members may also take advantage of the community’s Live the Life program, which allows members to sample life at Charlestown by actually staying overnight in the community.

Whether you are considering moving to Charlestown ten months from now or ten years, Hawes says it’s really never too soon to begin researching your retirement living options.

“When you consider all of the benefits that come with joining Charlestown’s priority list, there’s really no downside to signing up—even if you’re not quite ready to make a move right now,” says Hawes. “The sooner you start the process, the better off you will be.”
