Couple accesses expert help for their move to senior living community

Bill and Clara McGunigal lived in their Camp Springs, Md., house for 55 years. So their decision to move to Riderwood, an Erickson Living community in Silver Spring, Md., was one they gave a lot of consideration.

“We had been out here a number of times for expos and talked to folks. We knew what we had to do when the time came for us to move,” Bill says. “We were on the priority list since 2003, and we made up our minds in 2014.”

Bill and Clara moved to the community about a year ago. As members of Riderwood’s priority list, the McGunigals had access to Erickson Realty and Moving Services, a special program that offers complimentary coordination of all realty and moving needs, including downsizing, home staging, packing, and selection of a real estate professional. They worked directly with Riderwood Personal Moving Consultant Jennifer Hill, who connected them with an experienced real estate agent and moving company.

They hired an agent who has helped other Riderwood residents sell their houses. She suggested the McGunigals raise the asking price on their house—and her instinct was right.

‘Four offers’

“We put it on the market on Saturday, and by Monday we had four offers,” Clara says.

“She was very familiar with the neighborhood and was a big help,” Bill adds

Paring down the furniture and household items they collected over the years wasn’t too daunting because Bill and Clara had a lot of help. They got a jump start on the process by attending downsizing events at Riderwood, where they picked up useful tips. They also worked with a senior move management company that assists many Riderwood residents with their moves.

“They came out ahead of time and put sticky notes on the things we wanted to take,” Clara says. “They had a floor plan, and they packed up everything. Everything was placed in our apartment, and by afternoon, it was ready for us.”

The McGunigals chose a Jackson-style apartment home at Riderwood. Their first-floor home has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a patio.

“We’re making friends, and getting familiar with everything we can do here,” Clara says. “You can be as busy as you want to be.”
