Herb Siegel’s work takes him on the road, but he never has to worry about his home at Ann’s Choice while he’s gone. He also appreciates all the amenities the community offers that fit his lifestyle.

Herb Siegel’s search for a retirement community began in response to his daughters’ and granddaughters’ concerns about him rattling around alone in his large four-bedroom, three-bath house situated on a large property in Huntington Valley, Pa.

It ended in December 2016 when Herb made what he considers the best decision of his life: he moved from that big house to Ann’s Choice, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Bucks County.

Ann’s Choice offers everything Herb could want. Its location near his old neighborhood meant he would know where to shop, his daughter lives nearby in Doylestown, and, while Ann’s Choice provides an on-site medical center staffed by physicians and other medical professionals who treat only Ann’s Choice residents, he could stay with his current doctors.

‘Friendly and fun’

Another plus, his monthly service package covers everything from property taxes, utilities, and on-site amenities to maintenance, grounds care, and his choice of 20 or 30 monthly meal credits to use as he likes at the five campus restaurants.

Herb loves the food and the service. “If you eat here every day, it’s important that the people you’re interacting with make it friendly and fun,” he says. “The student servers are fantastic.”

Herb chose the 20-meal plan. Because he travels for business and also enjoys eating out, he always has credits left over. He uses them to treat family and friends to meals at Ann’s Choice.

A manufacturer’s rep, Herb has owned his own company for 40 years and has traveled all over the world for business. These days, he limits his travel to semi-monthly trips within the U.S.

“I don’t have to worry about a house while I’m gone,” he says. He doesn’t have to worry about it when he’s home, either. Should something go wrong in his apartment, he simply alerts the front desk; the Ann’s Choice maintenance crew is just a phone call away.

Should he have a medical emergency, pulling one of his apartment home’s emergency cords will bring the campus security team who are cross-trained as first responders within minutes.

‘Never lonely at Ann’s Choice’

Herb’s home is a bright and cheerful Jackson-style floor plan that features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a bay window. A corner location, the Jackson also boasts seven windows, two of them in Herb’s sunny kitchen.

Herb’s second bedroom, which functions as his home office, also holds his pride and joy, a classic Wurlitzer jukebox. “You put a quarter in, and the bubble lights play,” he says.

Herb’s happiness at Ann’s Choice spills over into his interactions with neighbors.

“I’ve made literally hundreds of friends,” he says. “I meet people in the restaurants, in the lounges having a drink, walking through the halls, at a lecture. You’re never lonely at Ann’s Choice.

“Whatever your interest, you’ll find something here for you,” he adds.

Campus activities focus on many of Herb’s interests, including tennis, chess, swimming, billiards, and bocce. He can also stroll to Liberty Commons’ lounge and play its piano for his own enjoyment.

“I’ve lived at Ann’s Choice for 18 months now,” Herb says, “and I’ve loved every minute of it.”
