For Carole and Dennis Swartz, moving last summer from Cape Cod to Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s continuing care retirement community in Delaware County, Pa., made perfect sense.

Because Carole had developed vision problems, the move represented planning for the future.

The Swartzes were familiar with Erickson Living and liked its model of on-site medical care, security staff cross-trained in emergency response, and an atmosphere of genuine community.

Choices, choices

Carole’s mother had lived at Riderwood, an Erickson Living community in Silver Spring, Md. “The staff and residents were so supportive of my mother,” Carole says. “They really reached out to her.”

Though Erickson Living has communities in Massachusetts, two of the Swartzes’ children live in New Jersey, and one is in Pennsylvania; Erickson Living has campuses in both of those states as well.

Carole and Dennis chose Maris Grove after their son in Pennsylvania lobbied hard for them to move near him. They were also taken with Maris Grove’s lively spirit and its 170-plus activities and special interest groups.

Local moving assistance

The sales team at Erickson Living’s Linden Ponds community in Hingham, Mass., assisted the Swartzes with their move by recommending an approved real estate agent with expertise in the Cape Cod housing market and a moving company with offices near Linden Ponds and Maris Grove.

The Swartzes’ home sold in four days, and because they’d used a recommended agent, they received a $2,000 credit in their resident account at Maris Grove.

Their home in Maris Grove’s new Redwood Commons neighborhood is a beautiful two-bedroom, two-bath Thurmont floor plan with a patio and a large kitchen where Carole and Dennis will make a variety of jams and jellies later this year.

Even more active lifestyle

They also pursue longtime hobbies as handcrafters: Dennis does woodworking and chair caning. Carole weaves Nantucket lightship baskets. He’s now joined the campus woodshop, and she’s started a campus book club.

The couple’s new lifestyle extends to square dancing, duplicate bridge, tending their community garden space, and participating in three different singing groups.

“We’re happy with what we’ve found here for the next chapter of our lives,” says Dennis. “We’re involved all around the campus.”

This spring, the Swartzes attended the Philadelphia Flower Show with Maris Grove’s travel group.

Dennis has explored the Brandywine Valley’s back roads, and he and Carole planned a ski trip, “Spending the kids’ inheritance,” he jokes.

But because Maris Grove thinks of everything, they might still leave a legacy.

As detailed in its Residence and Care Agreement, Maris Grove’s entrance deposit is 90% refundable to them or their estate.
