Lynn and Andrew Kochis used Charlestown’s vetted vendors for their move to Erickson Living’s Catonsville, Md., community over the summer.

While researching retirement communities, Lynn and Andrew Kochis asked residents of Charlestown whether or not they felt they had moved to the Catonsville, Md., community at the right time. Overwhelmingly the answer they heard most was, “I wish I had moved sooner.”

It was advice that Lynn, who owns a photography business, and Andrew, a recently retired tech industry consultant, took to heart.

“We had been on the priority list for a few years and decided we were ready to move,” says Andrew. “I was tired of lawn and house maintenance. I just wanted to get out from under that.”

So in August 2018 they took a leap of faith and moved from their 2,800-square-foot house in Granite, Md., to a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment home at Charlestown.

“We chose a Lexington floor plan located in the Brookside [residence] building near Cross Creek [clubhouse] because it reminded us of our neighborhood in Granite,” says Andrew. “It’s a corner unit in a wooded area of campus, but we still get a lot of light.”

Team approach

Lynn and Andrew worked with Charlestown Sales Counselor Jim Hawes and Personal Moving Consultant Vera Ballard to assist them throughout the move-in process.

“We knew from all the events we attended at the community that it was advantageous to use Charlestown’s vetted vendors,” says Lynn, “so we didn’t even consider trying to do it on our own.”

After an unexpected major home repair prevented a sales contract from going through, the couple decided to move first and then sell their home.

“I know we made the right decision. The house will sell, just a little later than we anticipated,” says Lynn.

That hasn’t stopped them from enjoying their new home at Charlestown.

“We both joined the fitness center, and Lynn is a swimmer and loves the pool,” says Andrew. “I’m a walker, but I’ve never been a member of a fitness center or used the kinds of exercise machines they have before. It’s nice.”

And because Charlestown is just a short drive from their former home, they’re able to attend the same church and continue with the same activities.

“We have already enjoyed some of the classes, concerts, and movies here,” says Lynn. “Once the house is settled we look forward to having more time to take advantage of many more of the things here at Charlestown.”
