Moving day could not come soon enough for Jan and Gene Meyer, the very first people to move into Goldfinch Lane, the newest residence building at Tallgrass Creek, in Overland Park, Kans.

“We’ve watched the new building go up brick by brick this past year,” says Jan. “We’ve been to several events at Tallgrass Creek during that time, which made us even more excited to finally be here.”

The Meyers were among the first to reserve an apartment soon after construction on Goldfinch Lane began about a year ago.

“We looked around and knew Tallgrass Creek was the place for us,” says Jan. “We reserved early so we could get the apartment we wanted where we wanted it.”

A day of firsts

Before their move, the Meyers joined other neighbors-to-be for a pre-move visit to their future home. The sales team hosted the festive event at Goldfinch Lane, where apartments were decorated with balloons.

“We liked seeing the openness and light our new apartment has,” says Bill Fithian who, with wife Martha, is planning a move to Goldfinch Lane soon. “We particularly like the kitchen and large adjoining eat-in area.”

The pre-move celebration continued in Goldfinch Lane’s spacious multi-purpose room where new neighbors chatted while enjoying a cheese plate loaded with charcuterie meats, cheeses, and fruit, along with other snacks.

Welcome, neighbors

As new neighbors move daily to Goldfinch Lane, current Tallgrass Creek residents and staff are doing their part to provide a warm welcome.

Tallgrass Creek’s management team frequently hosts orientations for new residents to learn more about their new home. The management team discusses campus operations such as human resources, finance, sales, onsite medical care, dining services, and resident life.

Additionally, new residents are automatic members of the New Residents Club for their first 12 months at Tallgrass Creek. Tallgrass Creek’s Resident Advisory Committee (RAC), a group of elected residents who communicate suggestions to Tallgrass Creek’s management, sponsors the club.

The New Residents Club meets monthly so newcomers can meet their fellow community members and hear about some of the more than 65 resident-driven clubs and activities at Tallgrass Creek, which cover everything from learning opportunities to gardening to physical fitness and more.

The RAC also sponsors an information desk for several weeks as new residents move to Goldfinch Lane. Volunteers staff the desk, centrally located in Goldfinch Lane so new neighbors can ask questions and directions, or just chat.

“We can’t say enough about how warm and welcoming people have been,” says Jan. “We are thrilled to be here.”

Experience counts

Tallgrass Creek, one of 20 retirement communities developed and managed by Erickson Living, offers a unique program to all future residents that simplifies the entire moving process.

Erickson Realty and Moving Services offers complimentary coordination of all realty and moving needs for those moving to the community. Services include home staging, packing, downsizing, and selection of a real estate professional.

“We partner with and vet local professionals with years of experience simplifying and de-stressing the moving process,” says Tallgrass Creek Personal Moving Consultant Nancy Worthington.  “Using their services can be the difference between a great move and just making it through.”

More than 75% of Tallgrass Creek’s residents, including the Meyers, have utilized one or all of the local moving-related businesses recommended by Erickson Living. They worked with a real estate agent and moving company recommended by Erickson Living, and gave high marks to both.

“Our real estate agent helped us understand the market and price our home correctly, and we sold it in one weekend,” says Jan. “Our moving company also did a great job. Thanks to both of them and so many Tallgrass Creek staff members, our move was as easy as it could possibly be.”
