Visitors to Tallgrass Creek are frequently surprised by the array of unique activities available to residents. There are so many learning and social opportunities, in fact, that the Overland Park, Kans., Erickson Living community produces a 20-page guide of activities each month.

Tallgrass Creek’s management team adds to the fun by hosting additional entertainment such as the lively Exec Connect. The popular event takes place one evening a month and always includes an entertaining game or activity. The group has enjoyed spirited games such as Name That Tune; charades; Hollywood Squares; and sparring about sports, movie, and historical trivia.

The bar is open and candy is scattered around tables where residents divide into teams to cheer on their team’s “exec champ” who competes against other management team members in the designated game.

“Things can get a little rambunctious,” laughs Executive Director Jean Landreville after an evening of charades. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Football and fashion

Tallgrass Creek’s management team kicked off football season this year with a happy hour and tailgate dinner celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ first home football game. Residents enjoyed specialty cocktails followed by a delicious feast of burgers, brats, ribs, wings, hot dogs, and all the fixings.

Afterward residents and staff decked out in red Chiefs garb settled in for some Chiefs trivia and, finally, cheered on the home team as they watched the Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos in a close but victorious game.

This year’s annual fashion show called “From Past to Present,” also drew a crowd. Forty Tallgrass Creek neighbors strolled the runway modeling current styles from a local department store, along with fashions from yesteryear. Resident and gifted musician Marlys Welch played background piano music.

“We had a full house and a lot of laughs,” says Julia Hildreth who coordinated the afternoon event. “Both audience and models enjoyed it.”

There’s more

In the last few months, Tallgrass Creek neighbors also enjoyed a “Dancing Under the Stars” event celebrating a newly installed pergola over the patio; a delicious complimentary pancake breakfast served up by local breakfast caterer Chris Cakes; an “Iron Chef”-style cook-off competition between Tallgrass Creek chefs; a meaningful Veterans Day event honoring Tallgrass Creek community members who served; and a multitude of holiday celebrations.

Additionally, Tallgrass Creek neighbors sit down each month with Landreville in her “Java With Jean” coffee hour where she shares upcoming community news.

Residents Janet and Bob Butterworth are among many who frequently participate in many of the goings on around Tallgrass Creek’s campus.

“If you like interesting activities, fun social events, and great exercise classes, it’s here,” says Bob. “If you like a friendly, caring environment, that’s here too.”
