Dan Plakatoris has experienced both sides of the moving process at Oak Crest, first as sales manager, then as son, when his mom Janet moved to the community in April 2015.

Dan Plakatoris has a unique perspective on Oak Crest. As sales manager of the Parkville, Md., Erickson Living community, he shows people the advantages of Oak Crest’s active, engaging, worry-free lifestyle. As a son he sees his mother Janet, who moved to Oak Crest from her Bel Air condo four years ago, experience that lifestyle firsthand.

“Having my mom live here at Oak Crest lets me see what living here is really like,” says Plakatoris. “It’s satisfying to see her so happy, and it gives me peace of mind. Her life truly serves as a catalyst when I introduce new customers and their family members to Oak Crest.”

Plakatoris joined Oak Crest in 2014 after putting his career on hold to raise his three daughters, now 23, 26, and 28 years old.

“I worked for BGE in customer relations for 11 years but then became a stay-at-home dad. It was a great decision for our family as it meant someone would always be there for our children, and my wife could flourish in her career,” says Plakatoris.

Next chapter

The transition back to the workplace found him considering Erickson Living.

“As our daughters grew more independent, it was time for me to pursue a career again. I knew a friend who worked at Erickson Living, and he raved about the company. It was important for me to work in an environment where I had total belief in the mission and goals of what we do.”

At nearly the same time, his mother Janet was considering the next chapter of her life following the passing of her husband Mark. She knew friends who lived at Oak Crest and attended luncheons to become familiar with the services and lifestyle.

“My parents had downsized to a condo before my mom moved to Oak Crest,” says Plakatoris. “Even though my mom has always been active and social, after my dad passed away, she was all alone. Now she’s up and out the door first thing in the morning. She volunteers with various groups in the community, swims at the aquatics center, and enjoys playing bridge with friends. Her calendar is busier than mine.”

When meeting with prospective residents, Plakatoris and his team stress the benefits of moving to Oak Crest while you are still young enough to enjoy the amenities and activities the community offers.

“We know one of the biggest challenges to moving to a community like Oak Crest is downsizing and leaving your house,” says Plakatoris. “We don’t pressure you. It’s your decision. We just want to make sure you have all of the information you need to make an educated decision.

“To that end, we have a personal moving consultant, Ashley Ruth, who will come to your house, and she will show you how doable it really is. We have a proven system that makes the moving process smooth and easy. Once people move, they usually tell us the same thing: ‘I wish I would have moved sooner,’” says Plakatoris.

The real expert

Janet is one of those people. Known as ‘Momma P’ throughout the sales office, she volunteers by opening her apartment during sales events to give prospective residents an inside look at Oak Crest.

“If you have questions about what it’s like to live at Oak Crest, my mom will tell you like it is,” says Plakatoris, whose uncle also lives in the community.

Because of his connections to Oak Crest, when he’s not working, Plakatoris can often still be found on campus enjoying a meal with his mom or at the Acorn Pub where he occasionally plays guitar and sings.

“I’m a people person. I wanted a job where I could help people and work at a company I could be proud of,” says Plakatoris. “My prayers were answered. That’s exactly what I got here at Oak Crest. The staff and the residents are just outstanding and by far my favorite part of working here. I love coming to work every day. It really is my dream job.”
