For Susan Kowalewski, home has always been wherever she lays her hat. With more than a few moves under her belt, thanks to her husband’s military career, Susan is accustomed to frequent change. So when she finally decided to trade in her Odenton, Md., condominium for a maintenance-free apartment at Charlestown, it didn’t take long for her to feel right at home.

“I was looking for worry-free living,” says Susan. “Just like in a house, when something goes on the fritz in your condo, you are responsible for repairing it or replacing it. I wanted something without any worries.”

She did what many people in search of a worry-free lifestyle in the Baltimore area do; she took a closer look at Charlestown, the Erickson Living community in Catonsville.

“I received information about Riderwood [an Erickson Living community in Silver Spring] in the mail and was talking to my daughter about it,” says Susan. “My son-in-law’s grandpa was a resident of Oak Crest [another Erickson Living community in Parkville] so I looked it up and found Charlestown. It is only ten miles from my daughter.”

Susan’s wish list for her new home wasn’t long. A second bedroom where she could quilt and craft was her only requirement.

“My daughter and I quilt for family and for charity,” says Susan. “I have a cutting table and my mom’s sewing machine, which I learned to sew on, and my own sewing machine which I needed room for.”

Exactly what she was looking for

Susan studied each of Charlestown’s two-bedroom floor plans and narrowed it down to four styles. The first apartment she toured turned out to be the perfect fit.

“I chose a Fairmont on the sixth floor. My apartment faces west, and I am able to watch the most beautiful sunsets. There are times I turn off all my lights and television and just sit and watch the sun set,” says Susan.

The two-bedroom, one-bath Fairmont features an eat-in kitchen with ample counter space for the creative home chef. The airy living-dining room combination makes this the perfect place to entertain. The master bedroom features a large walk-through closet, plenty of space for a king bed, and a private en suite bath. The second bedroom is ideal for guests, an office, or, as Susan chose, a craft room.

Susan was able to transform her new space and add her personal touch by selecting many of the finishes.

“I chose wood floors, marble countertops, and a step-in shower with a long bench,” says Susan. “I had custom shelving installed in my craft room and my master bedroom walk-through closet. I also upgraded the blinds and had every wall that faces outside painted with a serene color as an accent wall.”

Best of all, Charlestown now takes care of all the responsibilities Susan faced living in her condo, enabling her to maintain less and live more. Round-the-clock security and home maintenance are included in each household’s convenient monthly service package, as well as utilities, property taxes, use of all amenities, and a flexible meal plan.

“With six restaurants to choose from, there is a big variety when it comes to dining, and I don’t have to cook or do the dishes,” says Susan. “I also love to walk and usually walk anywhere from three to five miles each day. Unlike my condo, here at Charlestown I can walk anywhere no matter what the weather is like because of the enclosed walkways that connect all of the buildings.”

Susan also uses the fitness center and has attended on-site classes, concerts, and plays.

“The chapel is outstanding. The first time I walked in there, it took me back to Europe. We traveled a lot, and some of the cathedrals I saw reminded me of the one here. It is beautiful!” she says. “I highly recommend Charlestown. It’s wonderful! I do not miss my condo. I still do everything I did before but without any of the worries. I don’t consider this an apartment; this is my home.”
