Ed “Robbie” and Mary Robinson always knew they’d move to Ann’s Choice

Originally from Newtown, Pa., the longtime priority list members spent 15 years in a lakeside home in Clarksville, Va. While they loved the area, Mary says, “There was never any question that we would wind up here. It was just a matter of timing.”

The timing worked out sooner than Robbie expected. “My vision was that we would wait till we were 85,” he says. “Luckily, our kids convinced us to [consider moving] while we could enjoy everything fully, and it was the best decision. The community is vibrant, affordable, and maintenance-free. And when we saw the Harrison model we said, ‘That’s the one.’”

Easy living ‘on the corner’

Mary and Robbie love their Harrison’s patio view overlooking the courtyard, the two large bedrooms, and the coveted corner location. “With windows in every room, it’s bright and light,” says Mary. Adds Robbie with a chuckle, “I wanted to see grass, but I didn’t want to cut it. This was perfect.”

They make full use of their cheerful eat-in kitchen, with its ample counter space and room for a dinette set. Their spacious living room-dining room combination is comfortable and ideal for entertaining. Says Mary with a smile, “We are fortunate to have wonderful neighbors and to enjoy a Christmas party every year.”

The couple uses the generous second bedroom as a den and office. They placed his-and-her computer desks along one wall and stocked two bookcases with their favorite volumes. The generous windowsill holds cherished family photos and mementos. Robbie hung a large TV for watching the Phillies play, and there’s a comfy recliner for reading. “It’s our all-purpose space,” he says.

Both bedrooms feature two large closets, including a huge walk-in in the master suite, and there’s a separate linen closet in the bathroom. “There’s room for everything, and then some,” says Mary. She also likes having the stackable washer and dryer in a closet in the master. “It’s so convenient.”

Activities all day

Robbie and Mary are constantly busy. A self-described sports nut, Robbie works out in the fitness center at Ann’s Choice and plays tennis, pickleball, and water volleyball. Mary has enjoyed pottery and volunteers in the food pantry garden. “Last year we donated 913 pounds of produce to the food bank,” she notes. “It’s rewarding to contribute in such a meaningful way.”

Of all the activities at Ann’s Choice, Mary especially enjoys the lecture series. “You can learn so much from the variety of topics,” she says, “and the proceeds help fund scholarships for the student servers, who make dining here a pleasure.” Robbie adds, “And the meals are first-rate.”

The vivacious couple appears regularly on Ann’s Choice TV, he on Let’s Talk Sports, she on Dining With Diana, which reviews local restaurants. Says Mary, “Ann’s Choice is a one-stop place: The clubs, fitness, trips, dining, and special events are right outside our door. You won’t find a friendlier place to live. Everyone, residents and staff, goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. Everywhere you go you see smiling faces, and everyone says hello.”

Their advice to anyone thinking of moving to Ann’s Choice? “Do it sooner than later,” says Mary. “I can’t think of a single negative.” Adds Robbie, “Make the move while you can enjoy everything there is to do. It’s a marvelous way to live in retirement.”
