In addition to welcoming more new residents, Ashby Ponds’ sales team hosted numerous events designed to provide a real-life glimpse into the popular community.

In the midst of holiday preparations, community members and staff at Ashby Ponds look back on an exciting year of milestones at the Erickson Living-managed community in Ashburn, Va.

1. Record number of new community members

A record-breaking year for Ashby Ponds, the community welcomed 300 new residents, more than any other time in the community’s 11-year history. The new community members were received with open arms and a variety of “get to know your neighbor” events.

2. Welcome Will Nance

In January, Will Nance, a staple in Erickson Living leadership since 1998, took the helm at Ashby Ponds as the community’s executive director. Nance jumped right into community life, reaching out to residents, participating in daily activities, and ensuring open lines of communication.

“It’s been a lot of fun to be back on campus interacting with both residents and staff,” says Nance who, since 2011, worked as the regional vice president of sales for Erickson Living, a position that kept him on the road and often away from the people and campus activities that he says make his job truly great.

3. My Erickson launch

Also in January, Ashby Ponds launched the My Erickson app, a free app offered to all community members providing in-the-moment access to community information, messages, dining menus, meal balance, activity calendars, transit schedules, local directories, and staff information. Resident Services Coordinator Kelsey Hunt schedules appointments with new residents to help acclimate them to the app’s many features.

“The My Erickson app is a huge step forward in providing consistent, up-to-date information to residents who use computers as their customary way of communicating,” says Ashby Ponds community member Nan Krueger, who provided feedback on the app prior to its launch.

4. Voted top senior living community

In June, Ashby Ponds was selected as the top senior living community in the 2019 Loudoun’s Favorites, a reader survey conducted by Loudoun Now

According to the publishers, “this year’s readers’ poll generated a record response.  More than 6,100 names were submitted as nominations in the poll’s more than 200 categories.”  In fact, there were 17 nominations in the senior living category in which Ashby Ponds won.

5. Opening of Belmont Commons

In July, Ashby Ponds celebrated the opening of Belmont Commons, its thirteenth residence building. The addition adds 120 apartment homes to the popular community and is the first addition to Ashby Ponds’ third and final neighborhood.

Each of the new apartment homes features distinctive amenities, including airy layouts; modern kitchens with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances; full-size, side-by-side washers and dryers; walk-in closets; and custom flooring and fixtures.

“We listened carefully to what our current residents and priority list members like most about apartment homes already on campus,” says Director of Sales Holly Henderson. “As a result, Belmont Commons features an abundance of popular large, two-bedroom floor plans that meet the active lifestyle of our residents.”

6. Erickson Realty and Moving Services successes

Ashby Pond’s popular Erickson Realty and Moving Services program continued to grow, with 95% of all new residents electing to use many of the program’s wide-range of services, from home planning visits to downsizing services to real estate agents. Working together with these preferred vendors, each handpicked for the quality of service they provide, Erickson Realty and Moving Services helped sell almost $35 million in real estate in 2019.

“Our goal is to make sure that everyone who wants to sell their house and move to Ashby Ponds can do so easily and with as little stress as possible,” says Henderson. “There is no need for anyone to tackle the process alone.”

7. Diversity and Inclusion Week

In August, the Ashby Ponds community celebrated Diversity and Inclusion Week, which featured special events—a fashion show, an international dance festival, and a diversity fair and poetry reading—designed to provide both community members and staff the opportunity to learn from each other while embracing a multitude of perspectives.

All of the events were coordinated by the Ashby Ponds Diversity and Inclusion Resource Group comprised of residents and staff seeking to foster a diverse and inclusive culture while championing initiatives to ensure that every person is treated with respect and dignity.

“Our residents and employees are proud of the growing diversity in the community as we strive to make everyone feel welcomed and loved for who they are,” says Facilities Manager Jaroslava Slaninova, who co-chairs the group alongside community member Suzanne Rudiselle.  “The Diversity and Inclusion Resource Group is actively working on hosting even more events, such as Diversity and Inclusion Week, in the future to educate and enhance the quality of life for everyone.”

8. Student employee scholarships increase by 40%

This fall, 28 teenage employees at Ashby Ponds, who attended eight high schools in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, began the pursuit of their higher education thanks to the generosity of the community members they serve. In addition, this year marks a 40% increase in the total dollar value of the student scholarships.

To raise the needed funds for these life-changing scholarships, a fundraising campaign was held in the spring under the guidance and support of the resident-comprised philanthropy committee. The highlight of the effort was a variety show showcasing the talents of this year’s scholars. As a result of these efforts, the scholarships were increased from $5,000 to $7,000.

9. Groundbreaking for third community clubhouse

Recently, Ashby Ponds broke ground for the construction of the community’s third and final clubhouse. Opening in 2021, the new clubhouse will feature a state-of-the-art fitness center, professional pickleball court, aquatics center, and restaurants.

10. Priority list membership surges

With the number of available apartment homes dwindling, a record number of people joined the Ashby Ponds priority list this year. Many joined following the hugely popular home expo in April. Priority list members also took full advantage of the Live the Life suite benefit, an opportunity to stay overnight and fully engage in day-to-day life at the community.

“Because Ashby Ponds enjoys one of the highest occupancy rates in the nation, our priority list is the only guaranteed way to reserve a future home at our community,” says Henderson. “With the new year fast approaching, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment and personal tour.”
