Whether an intimate family gathering in your apartment or a large party in one of the on-site private dining venues, Oak Crest's Catering Department has many options when it comes to entertaining friends and family.

This Christmas Eve, while Madelyn Daniels attends Mass, the Oak Crest catering department will be busy preparing hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for her and almost a dozen of her closest friends. It’s a tradition she has enjoyed since moving to the Parkville, Md., community 15 years ago.

“I host a small group of friends in my apartment. Catering prepares light food like shrimp cocktail or spinach puff pastries. It’s delicious, and I don’t have to do a thing,” says Madelyn, who moved to Oak Crest from Las Vegas, Nev.

As a resident of Oak Crest, Madelyn has access to a wide variety of options that make entertaining easy and stress-free. But the holidays aren’t the only time Madelyn has called on catering for help. She has also hosted two birthday parties.

“I’m a widow and I don’t have any kids, so I wanted to celebrate my birthday with my friends, who are like family to me,” says Madelyn.

For her first party, she worked with catering, who prepared a crab cake dinner for 50 of her friends.

“They did a great job! The food was wonderful. It was so much fun I had another party five years later, this past May. This time, we did a spaghetti dinner,” says Madelyn.

Effortless entertaining

Elaine Lankford is part of a book club she helped start before she moved to Oak Crest five years ago from Lutherville. When it was her turn to host the next meeting, she invited the book club to her apartment and had catering deliver refreshments.

“About an hour before everyone arrived, catering came to my apartment and set everything up in my sunroom. All I had to do was put a tablecloth on the table. When it was over, they came by and picked up everything. I didn’t have to wash any dishes or buy and prepare any food. It was about as easy as it can be,” says Elaine.

Whether it’s a catered event or a casual get-together in one of Oak Crest’s seven unique on-site restaurants, residents can enjoy meals with friends and family without lifting a finger. An executive chef oversees the culinary program, and a chef de cuisine oversees each kitchen. A team of cooks and kitchen staff, along with hundreds of high school students who serve in the dining venues, provide support.

Daily menus offer a variety of entrées and specials ranging from much-loved comfort foods like meatloaf and pot roast to international fare. Fish and chicken breast, tossed salad, and other special diet-friendly foods are always available.

The campus offers three private dining rooms for any kind of event. Whether it’s a fancy dinner party or an informal brunch, Oak Crest’s on-site catering handles all the details.

Home for the holidays

Doris Buck always held a family dinner at her house the Sunday before Christmas. When she moved to Oak Crest four years ago, she was pleased to learn she did not have to sacrifice those memorable family gatherings. And with Oak Crest’s catering department preparing the meal, she now has more time to relax and enjoy her family.

“There are about 25 to 30 of us, and everyone comes from different places—some up to three hours away,” says Doris. “Using catering is so much easier. They provide everything for us, and there is a wide variety of things to choose from. I try to choose something new every year. They do a good job, and it’s a reasonable cost.”

The wide-ranging catering menu includes buffets with omelet and waffle bars; gourmet lunches with homemade sandwiches, soups, and salads; hot dinner buffets and plated entrées; afternoon teas; hors d’oeuvres; desserts; and a full bar.

Oak Crest Catering Manager Andrew Kleinschmidt says although the holidays are one of their busiest times, they serve all sorts of special events on campus throughout the year, from birthday parties and anniversaries to weddings and graduations.

“We cater to small gatherings at home or large events like our annual Oak Crest Gala. And Oak Crest’s catering services are not exclusive to Oak Crest residents and staff. We have local clubs and organizations that meet monthly in our private dining rooms and hold conferences in our larger venues,” says Kleinschmidt. “Our goal is to take your idea for a private party or event and bring it to life and make it a memorable event.”
