As the number of Baby Boomers selling their houses and moving to continuing care retirement communities grows, so does the use of senior move managers and other moving specialists. According to the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM), the number of companies helping seniors move has grown from 22 in 2002 to over 850 today.

This trend is mirrored at Windsor Run, an Erickson Living-managed community in Matthews, N.C., where, last year, 95% of all new residents moving to the community elected to work with the popular Erickson Realty and Moving Services program. Partnering with preferred vendors—each handpicked for the quality of services they provide—Erickson Realty and Moving Services helped sell over $1 million in real estate for current Windsor Run community members last year.

“We want to make sure that everyone who wants to sell their house and move to Windsor Run can do so easily and with as little stress as possible,” says Personal Moving Consultant Amanda Bates-Indenbaum, who coordinates the moving process with future community members. “There is no need for anyone to tackle the process alone. We work with a long list of trusted professionals, including real estate agents, downsizing experts, cleanout services, packers, and movers, all of whom have experience moving people to our community. I make it my job to handle all the intricate details.”

“I can’t say enough good things about my experience,” says Ellen Weaver, who moved to Windsor Run last July. “Everything worked together like a well-oiled machine. And what was the most remarkable to me was that I never felt like a number. I was made to feel like I was the only one they had to work with. I know that wasn’t so, but everyone I worked with made me feel comfortable and important.”

Important first step

For many seniors considering a move to a retirement community, taking the first step is often delayed by the fear of having too much “stuff.”

“I’ve met with many people who come to our events, meet and speak with staff members and residents, which reaffirms their decision to move,” says Bates-Indenbaum. “But, when they get home and open the garage door or visit their attic, the number of personal belongings that need to be either moved, sold, or given away is overwhelming, often postponing their move.”

To help alleviate these concerns, Bates-Indenbaum first meets with future residents in their current homes to discuss their expectations and to create a comprehensive selling and moving plan based on their individual needs. During this meeting, she also provides information on the wide variety of resources available through Erickson Realty and Moving Services.

“Whether people need a place to donate belongings during the downsizing process, or they are concerned about how their treasured furniture will fit in their new home, I can help,” says Bates-Indenbaum. “They will also receive the best real estate market advice from our preferred real estate agents, all of whom come highly recommended and are top sellers in the area.”

Pat Bell, one of Windsor Run’s pioneer residents, looked to Windsor Run’s moving support services to sell her home and move her personal belongings.

“Everyone was wonderful,” says Bell. “Prior to working with the Windsor Run team my house sat on the market for 330 days. I received lots of visits but no offers. As soon as I turned things over to the Windsor Run team, everything changed. The preferred real estate agent came out to my house and took new photos and measurements. They suggested a few simple updates, nothing expensive. My house was listed on the market on Monday and sold that Friday. I was amazed. I am eternally grateful to these new friends.”

“Moving doesn’t have to be the stressful nightmare many people fear it will be,” says Bates-Indenbaum. “Our team of trusted professionals understand, first-hand, all the ins and out of selling a home and moving to Windsor Run. They do the heavy lifting so our new residents can begin to enjoy their exciting new life as soon as possible.”

That’s exactly what John Roark did before moving to Windsor Run in 2018.

“I’ve sold eight homes in my life and nothing even comes close to the experience I had moving to Windsor Run,” he says. “The preferred real estate agent I selected did a wonderful job. I received 100% of my asking price, something that never happened with all my other moves. They took care of all the steps along the way, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Initial consultation

Another big benefit of working with a member of the realty and moving team is an initial home moving consultation.

Equipped with a board representing the future resident’s chosen floor plan, Bates-Indenbaum helps individuals select the cherished furniture and other items that will move with them to their new Windsor Run home. With moveable pieces, and working in concert, pieces are placed into the layout to see how they will all fit together.

“The home visit was so helpful in preparing for my move,” says Ellen. “We laid out all my furniture on the diagram board of my new apartment. I knew that I couldn’t bring everything, but there were certain things that I wanted because they make me feel comfortable. I was able to take them all, and by laying them out, I saw how it would all fit together. That made me feel very good.”

Wilda Tyler, who moved to Windsor Run in February 2019, also found the space planning invaluable to the success of her stress-free move.

“Moving the pieces of furniture around on the board really helps you see how it is all going to fit together,” says Wilda. “It became instantly clear that the [two-bedroom, two-bath] Millbrook was the perfect choice.”
