Love is definitely in the air at Maris Grove and Ann s Choice. There s one funny thing about love it tends to spread, and, like a smile, it s contagious.

Starting as neighbors

Mej Bernard and Joe Blake were each happily married to other spouses for 50 years, but those spouses passed in 2006.

Three years ago, Lee Feinschil started the International Folk Dance Group so her Ann s Choice neighbors could experience what she had so gracefully performed throughout the years. Ann s Choice was selected by readers of the Bucks County Courier Times as Best of Bucks 2009 in the retirement community category. The announcement was released in a special section of the newspaper in November.


Some call it Operation Stocking; others think it s a spin on stocking stuffing ; Fannie Kessler says it s all about reaching outside of the self and doing something good for someone else. Rhett is a full-time employee of Renaissance Gardens, the extended-care neighborhood at Ann s Choice. He clocks in and out every day. He gets most weekends off. And occasionally, he takes mini-vacations. But unlike other staff at Renaissance Gardens, Rhett doesn t receive traditional wages.


This fall, people living at Ann s Choice had the chance to take a poetry workshop taught by poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize nominee Lynn Levin. For many, summer consisted of schools hibernating, crickets humming, and people vacationing. Though they may have traveled out of town, members of the Ann s Choice Doing Good Committee stayed close to their ' mission to help others, planning several charitable events and they re not slowing down anytime soon.


Joseph Jurich is known simply as Doc. A legend in the schools where he taught and coached for nearly four decades, he has played the role of surrogate father and grandfather to all of the children in his life.

At Maris Grove and Ann s Choice, continuing education is a staple of many people s lives, and the teachers and students are oftentimes one and the same. A lifelong teacher Mort Goldberg, who lives at Maris Grove, in Delaware County, has been teaching at the largest continuing education center for the last 12 years.
