North Dallas chorus practice

“Where words leave off, music begins.” –Heinrich Heine

As the late summer months melted into fall, Highland Springs resident Gene Lawrence found himself pouring over musical scores for the community’s annual holiday concert.

Anna Hughes

For Anna Hughes, retirement planning can be summed up in one phrase: peace of mind.

“I’m originally from Ireland, and my family is still there,” says Anna, a retired nurse who has lived in Texas for the past 41 years. “When you don’t have family nearby, you have to look after yourself.”

Miniature golf

It may not have the allure of Augusta or the prestige of the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland, but the 18-hole miniature golf course inside Highland Springs garners its own brand of acclaim.

Jack Melick

Over the span of his 67-year career, Jack Melick has never been out of work.

“That’s not bad for a musician,” says Jack, a pianist and big band leader who got his start when Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Ray Anthony dominated the American music scene.

Jack’s first professional gig was a summer engagement at Camp Sagamore, a resort in the Poconos.

Darleen Springer

Darleen Springer isn’t one to linger over past achievements.

In 2012, the 87-year-old resident of Highland Springs bowled a year’s worth of perfect games on the Wii gaming system.

Now she’s on track to beat her own record.

Dale Hooper and Bob Brenner

Bob Brenner vividly recalls a pivotal moment in his spiritual journey.

“I’m Jewish, and my wife Viva and I are long-time members of Congregation Shearith Israel in Dallas,” says Bob. “About 25 years ago, members of the All Saints Catholic Community invited our congregation to share what we believe.”

Hanging herbs

Bob Derryberry has long been interested in where food comes from.

When he retired after 25 years with an insurance company, Bob embarked on a second career as an agribusiness appraiser.

Highland Springs recently rolled out its newest floor plan, the Westbrook, with over 1,900 square feet of first floor living space. The spacious corner retreat is the latest in a portfolio of floor plans that range from one bedroom, one bath apartment homes to the expansive single-level apartment home that rivals a single-family residence.

Four years ago the Highland Springs Chorus was a small band of friends who loved to gather around the piano and make music through song. We didn t have a leader or any particular direction, says Noni Meaney, one of the chorus founders. Several of us had been friends for years, even before we moved to Highland Springs, and we just loved to sing.
