Tallgrass Creek residents Jacquie and Terry Van Meter review photo albums spanning their military careers.

It was November 1967 when 24-year-old First Lieutenant Terry Van Meter stepped off an Army cargo plane and reported for active duty in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. The war was raging, and Terry, a distinguished military graduate from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., had deployed from Ft. Campbell, Ky., where his training as a combat commander was exemplary.

When Kyra and Jerry Warsnak recently settled into their new home at Tallgrass Creek, they breathed a sigh of relief.

Few sites are as impressive as a roomful of U.S. military veterans saluting our nation’s flag in honor of their service to our country. That, along with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, is how each monthly meeting of the Tallgrass Creek Veterans Club begins.

Tallgrass Creek residents follow their noses to the Cottonwood activities room where ten staff members each stand behind their department’s simmering crock pot of homemade chili. It’s the annual employee chili cook-off, and the competition is fierce and fragrant.
