Walkin' Around the World: Wind Crest Leads the Way in Walking Challenge

October 25, 2012

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO--In the name of good health and wellness, they wore down the tread on their tennis shoes and the batteries in their pedometers....all across the world.

467 residents of Wind Crest retirement community, along with employees, family and friends, committed to walking or other forms of physical activity in 32 domestic and 14 international locations in September.
This combined effort earned the campus a first place finish for the Most Participants and Most Places Walked in the Erickson Living Walking Challenge.
The team from Wind Crest also walked 34,011 miles, according to Kristy Hebert, the community's Wellness Manager.  Eligible activities included indoors or outdoors---plus cardio equivalents (e.g., treadmills, water walking, stair climbing, running, bicycling, dancing, etc.) that are all found at Wind Crest.
"Walking is undoubtedly one of the easiest and most beneficial exercises one can do but this competition allowed all types of physical activity so many people were able to participate," stated Kristy.  "Pure movement is vital throughout life but it is even more critical as we age."
"Inactivity leads to muscle weakness and tightness, sore joints, disease and an increased risk of falling.  As Wellness Manager at Wind Crest, our trainers strive to keep people moving in a variety of wellness and fitness programs so they can live to the fullest," noted Kristy.
Special appreciation is extended to Wind Crest Wade Biggs who assisted the Wellness Team with the coordination and tracking of miles and locations.

During the month of September, more than two thousand (2,509) people from around the country participated in the competition, coordinated by the developer and manager of Wind Crest, Erickson Living.
Combined, they walked over one quarter of a million miles (256,965)---effectively circling the globe at the equator more than ten times---in 22 different countries and 45 states and the District of Columbia.
"Special congratulations to Wind Crest for earning top honors in two categories.  Everyone is a winner in this event, though," noted Jeff Watson, Director of Operations for Resident Life & Philanthropy for Erickson Living.  "According to the latest research, when we spend a minute walking, we add about two minutes to our life. When we move from a sedentary lifestyle to being moderately fit, we reduce our chance of death from all causes by about 58%.  Perhaps Ben Franklin had exercise in mind when he said that 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.'"
