This fall, Windsor Run, an Erickson Living-managed community in Matthews, N.C., broke ground on the community's highly anticipated continuing care neighborhood, Piedmont Overlook. The new neighborhood is part of Windsor Run's commitment to providing all levels of health care at one site.

"The beginning of construction is a major step in fulfilling our mission as a full-service continuing care retirement community," says Executive Director George Comfort. "Piedmont Overlook will provide our residents, as well as local seniors, quality and compassionate care right here on our campus. While the building and amenities will be state-of-the-art and welcoming, the true foundation of this neighborhood will always be the people who will live and work in it. Piedmont Overlook will be a special place in which every stage of life is celebrated as rich and rewarding."

Tradition of excellence

A multiphase project, the first phase will offer residents assisted living, memory care, and long-term care services. Once complete, the 27,000-square-foot, one-story neighborhood will feature amenity spaces, including a restaurant, family kitchen, salon, living rooms, and an enclosed courtyard. A variety of modern studio and one-bedroom apartment homes will feature full private baths and showers, walk-in closets, granite countertops, and easy access to all the amenities and services that Windsor Run offers.

Currently, 18 Erickson Living-managed communities across the U.S. have continuing care neighborhoods. With a proven track record, including a hospital readmission rate that's half the national average, these communities already set Erickson Living apart as an industry leader. The new continuing care neighborhood at Windsor Run will continue to build on this tradition of excellence.

"Piedmont Overlook was strategically designed with the resident in mind," says Gregg Colon, senior vice president of health services for Erickson Living. "Our person-centered approach to care, paired with our thoughtful neighborhood layout, allows residents the flexibility and freedom to choose the services they need in the space that is most desirable to them."

Peace of mind

Although most people living at Windsor Run will never need the services provided at Piedmont Overlook, its addition provides community members with important peace of mind when it comes to the uncertainties of the future. Piedmont Overlook is also the fulfillment of a promise, often cited as a top reason for choosing an Erickson Living-managed community.

"As a hallmark of Erickson Living, Piedmont Overlook is of major importance and value to current and future residents," says community member Robert Mack. "When planning for our retirement, my wife Lynne and I only considered communities that provided all levels of care. The addition of Piedmont Overlook along with our current on-campus medical center, will undoubtedly establish Windsor Run as one of the best and most complete communities among its peers."

Community members Robert and Janet Mercer agree.

"Knowing that continuing care will be available at Windsor Run was a real plus when making our independent living decision," says Robert. "My wife and I both remember struggling with geographical displacement matters when assisting with care for our own parents. We are quite pleased to see Piedmont Overlook's construction start."

Designed by the award-winning firm of Lantz-Boggio Architects, a nationally recognized leader in the design of senior living and care environments, the first phase of continuing care at Windsor Run is expected to be completed by the first half of 2021. With an extensive portfolio in the senior living industry, Kaufman Lynn Construction serves as general contractor for the project.

Knowledge is everything

In the weeks leading up to the official groundbreaking, Colon and Matt Narrett, M.D., Erickson Living's chief medical officer, visited Windsor Run to provide community members with a detailed presentation concerning the ongoing plans for continuing care on campus.

As construction proceeds, Comfort and his team will continue to keeping community members up to date on the project's status. At the monthly, communitywide town hall meetings, Comfort will discuss in detail current construction progress and staff additions and answer questions.

"This year, we will be recruiting various nursing and managerial staff members," says Comfort. "Later this year, we hope to hire a director of nursing. We will also bring on other leadership team members and begin to hire direct care and support services team members. It is our goal to find talented, dedicated, and caring individuals to work with our residents."

Exciting year ahead

As construction continues throughout the New Year, community members and staff look forward to the peace of mind the addition of Piedmont Overlook will add to their lives.

"There is a comfort knowing that should our health needs change, we will have the option to remain on the same campus where our new friends and support systems are," says community member Maureen Hlavacek.
