Today's seniors tend to place a greater emphasis on staying physically active than previous generations, and many communities across the country have jumped on the trend. This is the case in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the local YMCA recently rolled out a new program dedicated to helping the over-50 crowd stay fit as they enter senior living, AnnArbor.com reports.
The program, known as the 50 Moving Forward initiative, is more than just exercise classes. It also provides older adults with information on everything from making smart dietary choices to tips on how to maintain a high quality of life to other facets of a healthy lifestyle for seniors. Organizers hope the program will encourage adults 50 and over to focus on their health because it will give them the chance to stay socially active as well.
"Interacting with a group encourages being active," Jan Hack told the website, "and being active supports being healthy. And the Y is good at providing those interactions."
Residents at Michigan retirement communities are certainly not the only people who can take advantage of the program. The initiative is a nationwide effort led by Pfizer and the YMCA and is being offered in more than two dozen locations across the country.
