For more than 40 years, Marie Knoblock used her skills as a social worker to help children at area elementary schools. Her accomplished background in education landed her a spot on the Health and Wellness Committee at Cedar Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Pompton Plains, N.J.

"We have a strong educational component," Marie says.

The committee helps raise awareness about the importance of maintaining health and wellness--just one of the many ways Cedar Crest focuses on residents' well-being.

"We're currently running frequent educational clips on our in-house TV channel about senior wellness topics," she explains. "And overall, we keep a pulse on the general health of the community."

More than ever before, retirees like Marie are passionate about caring for their well-being. To support residents across the country in this endeavor, Erickson Senior Living is investing $500 million in upgrades to its communities, focusing on amenities and activities that support physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Investing in well-being

At Cedar Crest, Erickson Senior Living's investment was used to fund upgrades to the Woodland Commons Clubhouse, which will feature the Woodland Bistro, a new fast-casual dining venue; virtual golf; and a media room.

Once renovations are complete, Woodland Commons will also house the largest fitness center on campus and a separate workout room for exercise classes.

"Many of the amenities and activities that matter most to residents have been enhanced through Erickson Senior Living's investment, creating even more opportunities for residents to achieve their optimal well-being," says Fitness Manager Stacey Myers-Smith.

Popular classes that address all aspects of well-being include Gentle Yoga and Restore, Mindfulness Mediation, and Cardio Drumming Fusion. One-on-one personal training is also available for an additional fee.

Active and engaged

"When I moved in, I was very impressed that there were lots of things to do," says Marie, who appreciates being able to continue her spiritual practices and stay sharp by participating in the lifelong learning program.

"The lifelong learning program is high on my list! I have been involved in and attended many of the programs," Marie says. "We had a retired educator who used to do a wonderful program on Shakespeare and poetry. There are all kinds of interesting topics."

Bocce, pickleball, water aerobics, billiards, and walking clubs are also popular among residents. There's no shortage of ways to get involved and meet like-minded neighbors at Cedar Crest!

"All of the activities here make a difference because they keep me busy and give my day focus," Marie says. "Before I moved here, I lost my husband, so I was living by myself. Cedar Crest is a lifesaver--the community doesn't let you become socially isolated."

Resident Services Manager Drew Nieuwenhuis agrees with Marie, emphasizing that socialization is integral to the well-being of many residents.

"Our on-campus activities offer so many ways for residents to make friends and socialize, both of which support mental health," explains Nieuwenhuis.

Marie notes that the community's restaurants are also great places to meet new faces. "Because you can eat in any of the dining rooms, you might run into people you know from your neighborhood, or you can say hello to new people from other buildings," she explains.

Supporting well-being

In addition to these activities and amenities, residents are able to reach their health and well-being goals by connecting with knowledgeable, dedicated staff members.

"At Cedar Crest, staff members are committed to helping people live better lives," says Nieuwenhuis. "Encouraging well-being is written right into our mission statement. Our team of health care providers, fitness trainers, and pastoral care professionals are always available for support."

With so many resources to choose from, Cedar Crest residents have a world of wellness at their fingertips.

"I love the independent aspect of living here, being able to come and go on my own," says Marie, who is making the most of her retirement by staying active and pursuing what's best for her physical, mental, and spiritual health.
